Our Mission

Develop new approaches to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of valvular heart diseases and determine the mechanisms underlying the development and progression of valvular diseases.

What is a Valvular Disease?

Heart valve diseases are characterized by one or more failing heart valves. In most cases, the affected valve does not open or close properly, thus impairing blood circulation.

Who Are We ?

A research team located at the Research Center of the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute affiliated with Laval University (CRIUCPQ-ULaval). Leading our team is Dr. Philippe Pibarot, an international expert in the field of valvular diseases. With the help of his team, Dr. Pibarot has significantly advanced medicine, particularly by improving the diagnosis and treatment of heart valve diseases.

Did you know ?

In North America, aortic stenosis is the most common heart valve disease. Currently, there is no medical treatment capable of slowing or halting the progression of this frequent and serious condition.

Aortic valve replacement surgery (AVR) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) are the only solutions available today for treating aortic stenosis.

On the other hand, mitral regurgitation, also known as mitral insufficiency, is one of the most common valve diseases among adult patients. It is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Like aortic stenosis, there is currently no medical treatment capable of stopping its progression. The only therapeutic option is mitral valve surgery or percutaneous intervention.
