Dr. Philippe Pibarot leads the Canada Research Chair in Valvular Heart Diseases and is a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Laval University. He also serves as the Director of Cardiology Research at the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute (IUCPQ-ULaval).
Dr. Pibarot earned his PhD in 1987 from the University Claude Bernard in France. He then moved to Canada where he obtained a PhD degree in Cardiovascular Sciences from the University of Montreal in 1995. Dr. Pibarot has received numerous awards, including the Annual Excellence Award from the Canadian Society of Echocardiography and the Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. His primary research interests include valvular heart diseases, echocardiography, valve surgery, percutaneous valve therapies, and cardiac amyloidosis.
In 1998, Dr. Pibarot joined the Laval Hospital (now named IUCPQ) and Laval University, where he established his research laboratory focusing on heart valve diseases.
The research projects led by Dr. Pibarot and his team aim to elucidate the mechanisms underlying valvular heart diseases and to develop new pharmacological, surgical, or percutaneous approaches to enhance the treatment of these diseases. Particularly, Dr. Pibarot’s team has made significant contributions to improving the diagnosis and treatment of low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis, which presents significant challenges. His team has also played a crucial role in validating and advancing transcatheter valve therapies. IUCPQ-ULaval is one of the leading centers globally in this technology that has revolutionized the treatment of valvular diseases.
Dr. Pibarot leads several large-scale research projects involving over 100 hospitals and universities in Canada and other countries. These projects are funded by various organizations including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, among others. Additionally, these projects receive funding from research contracts with major industry players.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pibarot has published over 700 scientific articles and delivered more than 1000 invited lectures in numerous countries. He has received numerous awards and distinctions, including multiple honorary doctorates from universities around the world.
